Lollove

Golden years

Lollove is a medieval town in Sardinia that experienced its greatest splendor in the 1950s. In those years the village reached a population of about 540 people. The main source of wealth of the town was based purely on agriculture and breeding which mainly consisted of sheep, wild pigs and cows, as well as being renowned for a large production of honey and oil.

Problems in the Village

The continuous lack of water in the area, the total absence of sewers, and above all, the increasingly rare bus routes and inconvenient timetables, have done nothing but encourage the exodus of locals. The last of the young people in the village have left to find permanent homes elsewhere in search of greater conveniences and availability of services. To the list must be added the explosive boom of the Ottana industrial center as well as the town of Nuoro which has been increasingly growing and is capable of offering much more than the usual monotony of the countryside.

Abandonment and depopulation

For these reasons, a mass exodus ensued which primarily consisted of large groups of young Lollovese, creating the right conditions for abandonment and depopulation. We thus passed from 2 schools (nursery and primary), a police station, two bars, a tobacco shop, a small grocery shop and a telephone, to almost the complete absence of all services. Over the years, many houses have lost their identity with fallen roofs, broken cobblestones, burnt out street lamps, uncultivated fields and stray dogs of which have too long been its masters. There are those who say that all this misfortune is due to an ancient curse placed on the village years earlier. Who knows!

Lollove

A contemporary rebirth

Beliefs aside, these misfortunes have greatly contributed to ensuring that the village has been preserved over time. This has rendered these apparently negative factors of abandonment and depopulation an opportunity to be exploited in order to rewrite the future, recreating a strong economy in the same breadth. Strengthened by a strangely internationalized name which recalls love, today Lollove attracts a flow of curious travelers whose main intent is to "get lost" among its narrow streets, accompanied by the sound of golden eagles hovering above, the ringing of the cowbells on the sheep and an almost deafening silence.
